The Greek Gods and Goddesses

The GreekGods and Goddesses are very important to the Greek history. Many know the Greek Gods were worshipped in ancient Greece but not really why. Thats what this blog is going to explain.


The main twelve Gods or Olypians as they are also called all live on Mount Olympus they are; Aphrodite, Apollo, Ares, Artemis, Athena Demeter, Hephaestus, Hermes, Hera, Hestia, Poseidon, and Zeus. It is said that Hestia gave up her spot on Olypmpus to Dionysus, Hestia now guards the fire on Earth. One god not really mentioned is Hades, Hades is one of the big twelve but is never really mentioned due to the fact that he lives in the underworld and dosn't reside on Olympus with all the other Gods and Goddesses.

Now maybe you're wondering why the Greeks worshipped Gods and Goddesses, well the Greeks believed that the Gods controlled what happened here on earth. For example, they believed that Poseidon was ressponsible for earth quacks and the sea. Here is a list of the gods and their specialty's.





Aphrodite:Goddess of Love

Apollo:God of light and the sun, truth and prophecy, archery, medicine and healing, music, poetry, and the arts, and more.

Ares:God of War

Artemis: Goddess of the Hunt, forest, hills, childbirth, virginity, and fertilty.

Athena:Goddess of Wisdom, peace, strategy, handicrafts, and reason.

Demeter: Goddess of grain, fertility, the pure, the youth, green earth, cycle of life and death, and preserver of marriage and sacred law.

Hephaestus:God of technology, blacksmiths, craftsman, artisans, sculpters, metals,metallurgy, fire and volcanoes.

Hermes:God of boundries, travelers, sheperds, cowherds, thieves road travelers, orators, wit, literature, poets, athletics, weights, measures, invention, general commerce and the cunning of thieves and liars. Also the god's messenger.

Hera:Goddess of marriage. Also the queen of the gods. Well known for revenge on Zeus' offspring other than her own.

Hestia:Guards the fire on Earth

Poseidon:God of the sea, earthquake,

Zeus:God of the sky,and thunder. Also the King of the Gods.




Now originally these major Gods did not rule Olympus before there was Cronus and Rhea. Cronus was not the greatest father he ate al of his children, except Zeus, due to a prophecy claiming that one of his children would overthow him, by then Reah had learned and hid her last born child on the island of Crete to be guarded by nymph. When Zeus was older he returned and freed his brothers and sisters in the battle between the Titans and Olympians.



Something odd about the Greek Gods is that they are all married or have hada fling with a siblingt or family member. It is said that Peresphone was Zeus' daughter but she is the known Daughter of Demeter, Zeus' older sister and she is Hades wife. Scary, right.
